Columbia Army Air Base

The Columbia Army Air Base was established by United States War Department in West Columbia, South Carolina for training flight crews. Airmen flew on bombing missions at warfronts across the globe. These images were scanned from the personal collection of William Hamson, who served as an air base photographer from 1942 to 1945.

Columbia Theater and Entertainment

A collection of programs and ephemera representing a long history of performance and entertainment in Columbia. This collection spans the twentieth century and features playbills and programs from the historic Town Theater and other local theatrical productions as well as novelties such as dance cards, movie memorabilia and event tickets.

Epting Family Collection

This digital collection contains a sample of photographs from the David and Annie Epting family collection. The items were donated by Julie (Derrick) Epting, widow of David Epting Jr. Photographs are from the Columbia, Lexington, and Newberry areas, and date between 1876-1955. Neighborhoods depicted include Shandon and Cottontown.

Fort Jackson Library Collection

A collection of photographs from 1950-1971 depicting the libraries, staff and patrons of Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C. In these years the Fort Jackson library stem grew from a Main library with 3 small branches to a centralized library system with more than 100,000 volumes. This collection was donated to Richland Library in 2015.

Jimmy Price Studios

Jimmy Price Studios operated in Columbia, South Carolina during the mid-twentieth century. Jimmy Price photographed a variety of subjects such as social events, business meetings, advertising displays, sporting events and accidents. The photographs in this collection were taken between the years 1954 – 1963.

Mabel Payne Photograph Collection

The Mabel Payne Photograph Collection contains hundreds of photographic negatives taken by Payne and other local photographers between 1959 and 1970. These images depict historic structures such as Ainsley Hall (Robert Mills House), the Seibels House, the Hampton-Preston mansion, and others. Maps of Columbia and Richland County

The Maps of Columbia and Richland County collection features an assortment of historic maps of Columbia and the surrounding areas. These maps depict streets, political boundaries, and school zones from the early twentieth century. These maps along with additional maps are located in the Walker Local and Family History Center at Richland Library.

Mayer Family Photo Collection

The Mayer family photograph collection was donated to Richland Library by Julian Hennig (1922 – 2006). Mr. Hennig was a lifelong friend of Monroe Mayer, Jr. who died in Columbia in 1987. Russell Maxey Photograph Collection

The Russell Maxey Photograph Collection at Richland Library includes over 7000 negatives, including images taken by Maxey and earlier photographers. Russell Maxey’s photographs allow researchers a glimpse into a southern city undergoing dramatic shifts in its economic, physical and social landscape. The negatives are housed in the Walker Local and Family History Center.

Sargeant Studios

John A. Sargeant was the founder of Sargeant Studios, a prominent photography studio based in Columbia, South Carolina that operated from 1918-1940. This collection contains a small group of Sargeant Studio news photography depicting accidents, crime and weather events from 1928 to 1939.
