Aquí Estamos (Here We Are) Digital Collection

Aquí Estamos is a digital archive that documents the history and culture of diverse groups of Latinos in the Lowcountry. The collection includes photographs, correspondence, promotional flyers, and other ephemera. The materials help document the first permanent settlement of Latino immigrants on Johns Island in the 1980s, the emergence of an Hispanic Catholic community, and the work of the Tri-County Hispanic American Association. The documents also trace the continuing efforts of area Latinos to organize politically, especially around issues of importance to immigrants.

Most of this material was gathered during “harvesting” events held in May and June, 2017 on Johns Island and in North Charleston.  Charleston Public Library, Lowcountry Digital Library , Circulo Hispanoamericano and the Holy Spirit Catholic Church community provided strong support for Aqui Estamos. The images are available here as part of a “Common Heritage” initiative of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Aquí Estamos es un archivo digital que documenta la historia y la cultura de diversos grupos de latinos en el Lowcountry. La colección incluye fotografías, correspondencia, volantes y actas. Estos materiales ayudan a documentar el primer asentamiento permanente de inmigrantes latinos en Johns Island en la década de 1980, la formación de una comunidad católica hispana y el trabajo de Tri-County Hispanic American Association. Los documentos también muestran los continuos esfuerzos de los latinos residentes en el área para organizarse políticamente, especialmente en torno a problemáticas importantes para los inmigrantes.

La mayor parte de este material se recopiló durante los eventos de recolección llevados a cabo en mayo y junio del año 2017 en Johns Island y North Charleston. La Biblioteca Pública de Charleston, la Biblioteca Digital de Charleston, el Círculo Hispanoamericano y la comunidad de la iglesia católica Holy Spirit brindaron invaluable apoyo a este proyecto.
