Scanning Equipment & Digitization Expertise in the State

Following is a list of scanning equipment and digitization knowledge at participating SCDL institutions around the state.

University of South Carolina Library’s Digital Collection Department
Inventory of equipment:

  • 3 Epson Expression 10000XL PHOTO flatbed scanners with transparency adapter (12X 17” scan bed)
  • 1 Epson Expression 11000XL PHOTO flatbed scanners with transparency adapter (12X 17” scan bed)
  • 1 Epson Expression 12000XL PHOTO flatbed scanners with transparency adapter (12X 17” scan bed)
  • 1 Zeutschel Omniscan 14000 AO Overhead scanner (Can scan up to 3×4 feet large)
  • 1 Qidenus Smart Book Scanner
  • 1 Mekel Mach12 Microfilm Scanner (high production microfilm scanner)

Specialized Software:

  • Content Management System is CONTENTdm with OCR AABBYY Fine Reader
  • SilverFast Scanning software
  • ABBY Recognition Server

Further Knowledge: We have experience with newspaper scanning, Optical Character Recognition Software, and Internet Archive projects.

Clemson University Libraries
Inventory of equipment:

  • 7- Epson Expression 10000XL flatbeds with transparency adapters (12X 17” scan bed)
  • 1- Kodak iQSmart3 flatbed
  • Epson Perfection V750
  • 1- Kaiser Repro Copystand 20”x24” baseboard with LED lighting and Canon 5D Mark ii camera
  • 1- PhaseOne IQ180 80MP digital back for oversize shooting on 60×40 vacuum board using CaptureOne software
  • 1- Atiz Book Scanner Pro, scans up to A2 size books
  • 1- Fujitsu fi-6240 Document scanner with auto-document feeder and flatbed options

Further Knowledge: Clemson is also an Internet Archive hub, so they have a lot of experience with those projects as well.

College of Charleston Library
Inventory of equipment:

  • 1 Plustek Optibook A300book edge scanner (12×17″ scan bed)
  • 1 BookEye 4V1 Overhead scanner with motorized book cradle (Can scan up to 26 x 36″)
  • 1 Plustek Optifilm 7600i Ai 35m film and slide scanner

Further Knowledge: We have experience with Optical Character Recognition Software, Lyrasis digitization programs, and the digitization of tightly bound, fragile materials and all varieties of transparencies.

Furman University Library
Inventory of equipment:

  • 1 Epson Perfection V500 Office with sheet feed attachment (8.5” x 11” scan bed)
  • 1 BookDrive Pro book scanner equipped with 2 Canon Rebel T31 EOS 600D cameras (Can scan up to 16 x 23” bound items)
  • 1 Canon Rebel T31 EOS 600D camera equipped with a 35mm f/2 IS USM Lens
  • Photography studio equipment:  Smith Victor KSB-1250F 3-Light 700 watt Fluorescent SoftBox Light Kit with Mini-Boom,  ETC Source Four Mini Stage Ellipsoidal Spot Light 50w 19 Degree Lens, Impact Background System Kit with 10’x12′ Black and White Muslins, and 2 clip lamps
  • 1 SONY dual cassette tape deck and 1 LiteOn DVD/VHS recorder hooked up to a Canopus box for digitizing cassettes and VHS
  • 1 TASCAM dubbing station for the conversion of LPs, DAT tapes,  and cassettes to CDs
  • 6 iMacs

Further Knowledge: Our most unique area of expertise is in the digital photography of three-dimensional objects and artwork.
