Thank you all for taking time out of your schedules to attend the South Carolina Digital Library’s Upstate Regional meeting last Thursday! We’re so glad that we had the chance to see so many new faces and appreciate your eagerness and involvement. The discussion was excellent and gave us all a lot to take back to our respective institutions. Also, a special thanks to Christy Allen and Furman University for feeding us and letting us meet in their beautiful library!
A quick recap of the meeting:
Chris Vinson, SCDL Associate Director for the Upstate, welcomed everyone and talked about the SCDL website, DPLA updates, and the SCDL working groups. Chris also demoed how browsing the collections and their facets in SCDL can help identify key metadata fixes. Ann Merryman, member of the SCDL Publicity working group, discussed the press kit that is currently being developed to improve visibility for newly created collections in the SCDL. Josh Morgan talked about what Clemson University, as the Upstate regional scanning center, has done for partners in the past and the services they currently offer.
The floor was opened for everyone to ask general questions, and to talk about a project they are currently working on or would love to have digitized. This spurred a fantastic back and forth conversation about many of the exciting projects partners are exploring and opportunities for collaboration were revealed. Yearbooks were a popular theme, which many of the partners already have their institutions’ books online and others were looking to have theirs’ digitized and placed into SCDL.
Robena Barton from Oconee County Public Library mentioned their oral histories and cabinet full of pictures surrounding Lake Hartwell development, which piqued many people’s interests, especially the Upcountry History Museum representative, Katie Womble, who just so happens to specialize in oral histories!
