LGBTQ Life in the Lowcountry Oral Histories

These LGBTQ Life in the Lowcountry Oral Histories document the life experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) people connected to the Lowcountry area of South Carolina. The oral histories are archived in Special Collections at the College of Charleston’s Addlestone Library as part of a larger project that also includes collecting and making accessible archival collections that document the local LGBTQ experience. The interviewers consist of College of Charleston students, faculty and staff, and the narrators are both natives and non-natives of the area of different races, ages, genders and identities, who discuss their life experiences, coming out, historical and social events, the founding and impact of various LGBTQ related institutions, various societal and familial expectations and reactions, homophobia and other related topics. The collection also includes recordings of presentations and panel discussions on related local LGBTQ issues. There are other recordings and oral histories available within the collection that have not been posted online and may be accessed by contacting project staff.
