Phillips Family Papers

The Phillips Family Papers collection is comprised of typescripts and manuscripts created by members of the Phillips family, prominent members of Charleston’s Jewish community in the Antebellum period. The collection contains recollections and a memoir, both serving as accounts of the family’s daily activities prior to and during the Civil War. Notable from the collection is a typescript copy account by Eugenia Phillips (wife of Philip Phillips) of her arrest and imprisonment by federal forces first in Washington, D.C. and then again on Ship Island during the United States Civil War. Philip Phillips was born in Charleston, South Carolina. Phillips was a prominent Southern lawyer and politician. He served as the U.S. Representative for Alabama and later as a member of the bar for the U.S. Supreme Court.
