Harby, Moise, Levy, Moses, Davis Family Photographs

The Harby, Moise, Levy, Moses, and Davis Family Photograph collection consists of cabinet cards, tintypes, and carte de visite portraits which were originally housed in a photograph album believed to belong to Octavia Harby Moses, daughter of Isaac Harby, the prominent Jewish Reformer and founder of Harby’s Acadamy. Many of the photographs include inscriptions to Octavia and document the extensive family and descendants of Octavia Harby Moses. Notable from this collection are portraits of Armida Harby Cohen (Octavia Harby Moses’ sister) and her husband, Marx Edwin Cohen, who owned the Clear Springs Plantation located along the Ashley River near Charleston, South Carolina during the antebellum period.
