Hasell Family Papers, 1803 – 1884

The Hasell Family Papers 1803-1884, collection includes four account books spanning the years 1813-1856.  These volumes record Dr. George Paddon Bond Hasell (1781-1818) and his son, Dr. Andrew Hasell’s (1803-1866) medical treatments for their patients, consisting of many Georgetown County plantation families and their enslaved men, women, and children. Information includes prescriptions, records of patient deaths, births, lists of illnesses, injuries, and medical fees.  

Dr. George Hasell attended the University of Edinburgh in Scotland as a medical student where he eventually married Penelope Bentley. Their children included Andrew Hasell and Bentley Hasell (1807-1836.) Bentley Hasell was the father of Lewis Cruger Hasell (1830-1889), a physician and plantation owner. The volumes of Dr. George Hasell span 1812-1816, and include medical treatments for the Harleston, Quash, Pinckney, Shrubrick, Ball, Pickens, Lucas, Maybank, Bryan, and many other families.  

Dr. Andrew Hasell was a physician, South Carolina legislator, and plantation owner. He owned Cedar Grove Plantation in All Saints Parish and practiced medicine on plantations along the Waccamaw River. He married his cousin Joanna Weston. The three volumes of Dr. Andrew Hasell span 1830-1856. Families mentioned in the books include Allston, Berlin, Carson, Frasier, Gadsden, King, LaBruce, Middleton, Tucker, Ward, Weston, Wrightman, Hemmingway, Pyatt and others.

Medical treatments include amputations, tooth extractions, treatments for fractures and chronic illnesses, medicines for fevers and coughs and delivering babies.
