Huger Smith (1876-1958), was part of the Charleston Renaissance and is remembered as a painter, printmaker, author, illustrator, historian and historic preservationist.

Plantation owners, Duncan and Frances Waddell had recently hired Charleston landscape architect, Loutrel Briggs (1893-1977) to plant numerous azaleas and camellias throughout the property.
