About
The Agricultural Experiments and South Mulberry Plantation Journal, 1841-1907 (bulk 1841-1867) collection contains a bound journal kept by Sandford William Barker at South Mulberry Plantation in Berkeley County, South Carolina, which Barker acquired through his marriage to Christiana Constantia Broughton in 1835. A graduate of the Medical College of South Carolina as well as a South Carolina Senator and botanist, Barker’s journal contains both crop records and agricultural experiments carried out on plantations in the county. These plantations include Mulberry, The Bluff, Elwood, Willow Grove, Gippy, Exeter, and Manchester, and experiments include those done with rice performed by Barker or experiments with wood from various trees by Dr. Julius Porcher. The journal also records information for the freed men, women and children at South Mulberry Plantation documenting their names, occupations, birth dates and death dates between 1865-1907.
