The Local Television News Collections at Moving Image Research Collections (MIRC) comprise approximately 1.5 million feet of 16mm motion picture film outtakes dating from the late 1950s to the early 1980s, donated by several South Carolina television stations. These outtakes document over two decades of local people and events, as well as reportage surrounding significant moments in national and world news throughout the 1960s and 1970s. Paper holdings include teleprompter scripts from 1963 through 1979.
WIS-TV News Collection
Contains outtake footage shot by the news crews of Columbia, South Carolina’s NBC affiliate from 1959 to 1979. It includes 16mm color and black and white films, both sound and silent. This subset of the WIS-TV News Collection is comprised of approximately 90,000 feet of Awareness news magazine outtakes from 1970-1980. Created in 1970 as a public affairs program for South Carolina’s African-American community, Awareness was the first show of its kind in the state. Notable names appearing in outtakes include Dizzy Gillespie, Pam Grier, Dr. Ronald McNair, Modjeska Simkins, Septima Clark, Julian Bond, Nikki Giovanni, Rev. Jesse Jackson, Rep. John Conyers, and Rep. Charles Diggs. The collection contains the original 16mm color film outtakes of studio interviews and location sequences that made up the bulk of Awareness content.
