The Mulberry Plantation Journals, 1853-1908 (bulk 1853-1889) collection is comprised of four bound journals containing records of Mulberry Plantation in Berkeley County, South Carolina kept by plantation owners John B. Milliken, Thomas Milliken and overseers C.A. Ward and R. Meynardie. Volume One kept by Thomas Milliken between 1853-1858, reports activities on the rice plantation such as agricultural tasks, rice winnowed, weather conditions, sicknesses and deaths among slaves, food allowances and nightly watches. Volume Two kept by the overseers C.A. Ward and R. Meynardie between 1855-1856 record the weather, sick slaves, amounts of rice winnowed and information pertaining to cattle. Volume Three kept by R. Meynardie between 1856-1860 records charts and lists of rice winnowed and cattle farming. Volume Four kept by John Boyle Milliken between 1863-1889 includes tax accounts, rice farming and vegetable gardening, visits from friends, church services attended, political views surrounding elections of the United States Senate and Presidential Elections and earthquakes.
