The Lawrence Layden Scrapbook contains photographs and papers documenting his wartime service. Lawrence Layden was a Captain in the 67th Tactical Reconnaissance Group during World War II. Personal papers consist of induction papers, forms listing the date for reverting to inactive service, military security passes, promotion papers, transfer papers, letters of recommendation to attend Officer Candidate School, and identification cards. Photographs include scenes from Esler Field, Louisiana, training and the graduating class of the Officer Candidate School in England, newspaper clippings, pre and post D-day reconnaissance, popular sites around Europe taken on leave days, Buchenwald concentration camp, strategic maps, and general reconnaissance. Also included in the collection, a document titled “Mementoes of Days in Service” details Lawrence Layden’s service in World War II from his induction in June 1941, six months before Pearl Harbor, until his formal discharge in December, 1945 as part of the 67th Tactical Reconnaissance Group.
